Add your commentMa'am with all due respect, walking to dinner in Canton means walking through a parking lot to get from one strip mall to another strip mall. That is not a walkable downtown. That is a parking lot with ambitions.
Hopelessly boring? No. Intentionally boring? Also no — it just kind of happened that way through decades of car-first planning decisions that nobody voted on explicitly but everyone implicitly accepted because the schools are good and the crime stats are low. The problem is we never had a real conversation about what kind of place Canton WANTS to be. We just let Target and Costco answer that question for us.
Born and raised in Canton. Graduated from Plymouth-Canton in 2003. Back then it was even more of a ghost town after dark, and honestly? We liked it that way. Raised three kids here now and I sleep fine knowing the biggest danger on Friday night is whether someone takes the last parking spot at Meijer. Not every place needs to be Ann Arbor.
The real question nobody's asking is why the township keeps approving more and more apartment complexes along Canton Center Road but refuses to zone for anything that would actually make those residents' lives walkable or interesting. We're importing density without importing the infrastructure that makes density work. It's backwards planning and it's been backwards for twenty years.
I moved here from Chicago two years ago for work and I genuinely thought I'd hate it. Surprise: I actually love that it's quiet. You people complaining about no nightlife — Ann Arbor is literally 15 minutes away. Detroit is 30. Use your car. This isn't Manhattan and nobody sold it to you as Manhattan.
I want to push back on the "just drive to Ann Arbor" crowd. Some of us have kids. Some of us work early. Some of us don't want to pay $8 for parking and $14 for a beer just to feel like we have a social life. The whole point of a community is that you shouldn't need to LEAVE IT to feel like you belong somewhere.
okay but can we talk about the fact that even the Applebee's on Ford Road closed?? like at what point do we just admit defeat and put up a sign that says "Canton: We Roll Up The Sidewalks At 8:47 PM"
Fun fact: Canton is technically one of the largest townships in Michigan by population. Over 100,000 residents. You know what most 100,000-person cities have? A downtown. A main street. Something. We have a roundabout on Cherry Hill that people still can't figure out how to navigate. I rest my case.
I used to live off of Lilley Road back around 2015 and left for Ferndale specifically because I felt like I was disappearing into beige. Best decision I ever made. No shade to people who love it there — genuinely, different strokes — but for anyone feeling that quiet, creeping restlessness after dark, it's okay to admit the place just isn't built for you.
canton has a TOP TIER farmers market on saturdays in the summer and honestly that alone puts it above half the suburbs around here. also the library does evening events all the time. people just want bars and if theres no bars they call a place dead. thats a them problem
My husband and I walk to dinner at least twice a week so I don't know what everyone's complaining about. Canton has tons of great restaurants!
