My kids are in 5th and 7th grade now and the programs they have access to — robotics, dual enrollment, AP everything — would cost a fortune in private school tuition elsewhere. People complain about the bill but don't do the math on what they'd pay in private school fees if they lived somewhere cheaper.
That last comment is just factually wrong. There is no tri-county averaging formula. Canton is in Wayne County, taxed by Wayne County, full stop. Your assessed value is set by the township assessor at 50% of market value per Michigan law, same as everywhere else in the state. Please don't spread misinformation on a topic that's already confusing enough for new homeowners trying to budget.
I want to push back on the person saying P-CEP schools justify everything. My daughter's elementary class has 29 kids in it. Twenty-nine. That is not a premium educational experience, that's crowd control with worksheets. The district has been growing faster than it's been staffing and the tax base isn't keeping pace with development. We keep approving new subdivisions and then wondering why the schools feel stretched.

I moved here from Ann Arbor three years ago and honestly? I was prepared to be underwhelmed and I wasn't. The parks are immaculate, the library system is legitimately excellent, and my neighborhood feels safe. I was paying comparable taxes in AA and getting way less attentive township services. Lived here 11 years and my honest take is the VALUE is there but the TRANSPARENCY isn't. I shouldn't need a law degree to figure out where my millage dollars actually go. The township website buries the budget info so deep it's basically a dare. If the services are worth it, prove it. Publish a clear annual breakdown that normal people can actually read.
Shoutout to the Canton Senior Center though because that place is genuinely wonderful and my mom uses it three times a week. Fitness classes, social programs, trips — it's kept her engaged and healthy and I truly believe it's extended her quality of life. That's a real service that taxes fund and it never gets mentioned in these debates because everyone only wants to talk about roads.
my grandparents bought their house on Lilley rd in 1987 for like 89k. now that same house is assessed at over 380k and theyre retired on fixed income. the taxes on it are choking them out. easy to say its worth it when youre a dual income household in your 30s. not everyone has the same situation

Here's my challenge to anyone defending the status quo: go attend an actual Canton Township board meeting and then come back and tell me you feel good about administrative efficiency. I went to one last spring about the Summit on the Park expansion proposal and it was three hours of procedural theater. Staff couldn't answer basic cost questions. That's where your tax dollars go — into an organizational structure that's very good at meetings and very slow at outcomes.
Nope. Hard disagree with the whole premise here. Property taxes being "high" relative to Wayne County just means Canton hasn't cratered like the rest of Wayne County has. That's called being desirable. You want lower taxes, go move to Inkster and tell me how that works out.
OK here's a take nobody wants to hear: Canton's property taxes are actually LOWER than most comparable townships in Oakland County. Northville Township, Lyon Township — they're paying more for roughly equivalent services. We're comparing ourselves to the wrong benchmark. The real question is why Wayne County gets such a bad reputation when Canton has quietly been one of the best-run townships in southeast Michigan for 20 years.
Actually, Wayne County townships are taxed under a completely different millage system than Oakland County so you can't really compare them directly at all — Canton actually uses a tri-county assessment formula that averages your rate with Washtenaw. I read about this somewhere. Point being the numbers people throw around aren't apples to apples.
