Born and raised in Canton, my dad worked at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant for 31 years. You think I'm gonna put a Chevy bow tie in my driveway? That's not just brand loyalty, that's respect for what put food on our table. Some things aren't complicated.
This whole debate is kind of embarrassing honestly. Both companies are publicly traded corporations that do not know you exist. They are not rooting for YOU. Buy whatever car doesn't break down on I-275 in January.
My grandfather would genuinely not speak to his brother in law for about four years over this exact argument. They reconciled eventually but only because grandma put her foot down at Christmas 1987. The rivalry is real. It was never just about cars.
ok so i moved here from Austin two years ago and i genuinely did not understand why my neighbor gave me the silent treatment for like three weeks after i parked my Silverado in front of my own house. i thought it was something i said. it was not something i said.
Anyone who calls it "treason" needs a history lesson AND a hobby. The tribalism around this stuff keeps working class people from asking harder questions about why both companies shipped so many jobs overseas while people in Wayne County were losing their homes. Just saying.
Treason is a strong word but also... kind of accurate? We live MINUTES from the Rouge Complex. Henry Ford basically built the infrastructure of this entire region. Rooting for GM here isn't a personal choice, it's a statement, and everyone knows it.
I'll say what nobody wants to say: Ford quality in the late 90s and early 2000s was genuinely terrible and a lot of families switched to GM during that era and never came back. That's not treason, that's survival. My '98 Expedition nearly bankrupted us in repair bills.
Someone up in these comments said GM's headquarters has more claim to Detroit than Ford — that's genuinely one of the wildest takes I've seen on this forum and I've been here four years. Dearborn IS Metro Detroit. The whole region built its identity around Ford. The Rouge plant alone employed more people than most American cities had total residents. Please.
Fun fact people always get wrong: Ford's headquarters is in Dearborn, not Detroit proper, and GM's RenCen is actually IN Detroit. So technically if we're talking city loyalty, GM has more claim to Detroit the city. I'll wait while Canton people process that.
lol my whole family is split on this. mom is Ford, dad is Chevy, they have been married 34 years. somehow it works. love is stronger than brand loyalty i guess. or they just dont talk about it
