Can someone explain to me why people who went to neither school and have no kids at either school are the LOUDEST ones? There's a guy on my street — community college, proud of it, nothing wrong with that — who has an entire Michigan Man Cave in his garage. Like sir who are you rooting for exactly
Grew up on Saltz Road, dad went to Michigan, mom went to MSU. Every Thanksgiving my entire childhood was basically a UN peacekeeping negotiation. We had a literal rule: no game talk at the dinner table until the pie was served. Even then it got ugly. So yes. Yes it tears families apart. More than anything.

Former Canton resident here, moved to Nashville six years ago. I'll tell you what tears Canton families apart way more than football: the never-ending road construction on Ford Road. That's the real wedge issue. The rivalry is at least FUN.
My husband and I have been on opposite sides of this since we started dating in 2009. We have a written agreement — whoever's team loses The Game that year has to do all the holiday card addressing. It sounds petty. It is absolutely petty. We are completely fine with this.
I just moved here from Arizona eight months ago and I genuinely did not understand what was happening the first Saturday in November. Every house on my street suddenly had flags out, someone was grilling at 10am, and my neighbor glared at my green jacket (I wore it because it was cold, I have no team). Nobody warned me. Someone should warn new residents.
My kids go to Plymouth-Canton schools and I promise you the moms in the carpool line are more divided about this than about literally anything else. We managed to have a perfectly civil conversation about redistricting last spring. Bring up The Game and someone's leaving the group chat. Every year without fail.
The political debates in this township get nasty in ways the football rivalry never does. I've seen friendships actually END over school board stuff and local elections. At least after The Game everyone shakes hands and goes back to being neighbors. Don't conflate lighthearted rivalry with real division.
Honestly? The rivalry is fun and people in Canton play it up way more than they actually feel it. Most of my neighbors are just happy to have an excuse to wear a hoodie and drink beer on a Saturday afternoon. Nobody's actually SUFFERING here lol
Let me correct something I keep seeing people say — MSU's colors are green and white, NOT green and gold. People mix this up ALL the time and it drives every Spartan fan absolutely insane. Get it right before you talk about the rivalry please.
Lifelong Canton resident, born at St. Mary Mercy, both my parents and all four grandparents lived here. This township has survived a LOT of disagreements over the decades — development fights, the transit debates, school millages. The football thing is background noise. Anyone saying it's MORE divisive than politics has never been to a township board meeting.
Way too seriously. Full stop. These are adults painting their faces for teams they have no financial or personal stake in. Half the people screaming about Michigan or MSU never attended either school. The whole thing is performative tribalism and Canton buys into it embarrassingly hard.
