Context matters in beer. It always has. A Corona on a beach in Cancun tastes better than any IPA in a basement. Location and moment are part of the flavor profile and I will die on this hill.
I've done actual blind taste tests with my homebrew club on Atwood Ave. Spotted Cow came in third behind a Boulevard Wheat and a local Karben4 offering. Nobody guessed it was Spotted Cow. The scarcity halo is REAL and we've all been wearing it for years. Sorry not sorry.
I used to live in Madison for grad school and moved back to Chicago four years ago. Let me tell you — I smuggled a six-pack back in my bag after every single visit home to see my sister on the east side. Was it the best beer I'd ever had? Probably not. Did I treasure every single can like it was liquid gold? Absolutely yes. Scarcity does something weird to your brain and I fully accept I was a victim of it.
Born and raised in New Glarus. My uncle literally knows people who work at the brewery. The craftsmanship there is genuine — they use locally sourced ingredients and Dan Carey has real brewing credentials from Germany. Dismissing it as a gimmick because of some blog's blind taste test is exactly the kind of contrarian nonsense that makes Madison insufferable sometimes.
Fun fact for everyone: New Glarus actually started distributing to Illinois back in 2002 and pulled out of the market because they couldn't keep up with demand in Wisconsin. That's not a gimmick — that's a small family brewery making a principled business decision. People always forget that part of the story and just assume it's manufactured exclusivity like some kind of craft beer Supreme drop.
Spotted Cow is technically classified as a cream ale, which is one of the least exciting styles in all of craft brewing. There. I said it. You want something actually impressive from New Glarus? Try their Raspberry Tart or the R&D series stuff. But nobody talks about that because it isn't plastered on every bar tap from Middleton to Sun Prairie.
I just moved here from Portland six months ago and honestly? I was ready to be cynical about Spotted Cow given how much people hype it. And then I just... liked it? It's smooth, easy-drinking, not trying too hard. I don't think it needs to be the greatest beer ever made to be genuinely good. The discourse around it is way more exhausting than the beer itself.
my coworker brought a cooler of spotted cow to our office thing last summer and people were literally taking photos of the cans like they were at a concert. these are adults. with jobs. in madison wisconsin. we live HERE. you can get it at the grocery store on university ave. i don't understand anything anymore
ok but can we talk about how every single person who moves to Madison from out of state acts like they discovered some ancient treasure when they first drink a Spotted Cow at a Badger tailgate?? like yes we know. we've been drinking it since we were... anyway. it's fine. it's a fine beer.
Someone upthread said New Glarus distributes to Minnesota — they absolutely do not, never have. Wisconsin only, full stop. Please do not spread misinformation about the sacred cow. (And yes it's good beer. Anyone who says otherwise is probably just upset they can't get it back home.)
Nope. Hard disagree with the whole premise here. Good beer is good beer. I don't need a brewery to ship nationwide to validate my enjoyment of it.
