I cancelled my Netflix subscription after finishing it. Not out of anger, just genuinely felt like I'd been strung along and I'm tired of that feeling from streaming platforms. I'll come back when S3 drops, watch it, then cancel again. They've trained me to be a bad customer.
The ending was DELIBERATE. Hwang Dong-hyuk has been clear from day one that this was always going to be a trilogy. People acting shocked that a middle chapter ends mid-story have apparently never read a book series in their life.
Cash grab or not, I'll be first in line for Season 3 and so will everyone else complaining right now. That's just true. We should at least be honest about that.
Hwang said in interviews he didn't want to make more Squid Game. Then he did. Then he split it into two parts. The art stopped driving the train a while ago.
I think people forget that storytelling in Korean drama has always operated differently. Episodic tension, delayed resolution, moral ambiguity without closure — these are features, not bugs. Western audiences expect a tidy bow and read its absence as failure.
Hard disagree with that logic. People talked about Game of Thrones Season 8 for years and it was a catastrophe. Controversy isn't the same as quality.

The problem isn't the cliffhanger. The problem is the MIDDLE of Season 2 sagged so badly that by the time the ending hit I no longer trusted the show to deliver a satisfying conclusion. A cliffhanger only works if you believe the payoff is coming.
My whole family watched it together and we had the best argument we've had in years about whether Gi-hun's choices were selfish or heroic. Whatever the show's flaws, it's still generating that. Can't dismiss that completely.

Season 1 ending was perfect because it rejected the hero's journey. Gi-hun won and it meant nothing. That subversion WAS the statement. Season 2 can't subvert itself a second time. It's in an impossible position creatively.
The Front Man storyline saved the season for me. Honestly more interested in his arc than Gi-hun at this point. If S3 pays that off properly I'll forgive everything.
The show literally invented a new vocabulary for visual storytelling in Episode 1 of Season 1. By Season 2 it's using its own iconography as wallpaper. The pink guards and the numbered jumpsuits mean nothing anymore because they're merchandise now.
The games themselves were weaker. Mingle was genuinely terrifying. The rest felt like they were trying to replicate the dread of Red Light Green Light and failing. You can't manufacture that lightning twice.
The real question nobody's asking: does Season 3 even need to be made? What story is there left to tell that Season 1 didn't already tell better? Diminishing returns are structural at this point.
Netflix literally told Hwang to split the story. You can feel the seam. There's a version of this where S2 and S3 are one complete season and it would've been genuinely great. What we got instead is half a story.

Unpopular opinion: Season 2 was actually better written than Season 1 in terms of political subtext. Season 1 was mostly vibes and shock value. Season 2 tried to say something real about class solidarity and why it fails. People just liked the games more in S1 so they're grading on nostalgia.
Season 1 worked because it was a COMPLETE story with a devastating final message. Gi-hun won but lost everything. That was the point. Season 2 doesn't have a point yet because it isn't finished. Comparing them isn't fair but also Season 2 gave us nothing to hold onto emotionally.
Netflix has a pattern of greenlit-all-at-once shows that frontload quality and backload filler. Squid Game is just too prestigious for anyone to say it out loud but that's what happened here.

I work in production (not for Netflix, a different streamer) and I can tell you from the inside that "creative decision" and "platform pressure" are usually the same thing dressed in different clothes. This ending screams contractual obligation.
