Add your commentSuzume's road-trip structure dragged for me. Gorgeous, but the pacing wandered. Slight decline, beautifully shot.
Suzume is Shinkai finally growing up — a story about grief and a girl saving HERSELF instead of waiting for a boy. That's evolution, not decline.
Each film is more thematically mature and slightly less emotionally explosive. So both camps are kind of right.
Suzume tackling the 2011 earthquake gave it a real-world weight his other films only flirted with. That's his most important film, not his prettiest.
People calling it decline just want Your Name again. He gave you something new and you punished him for it. Typical.
Hodaka firing a gun and choosing Hina over the world is the most underrated 'unhinged romantic' moment in anime film.
Weathering With You felt like Your Name's little sibling. Suzume felt like its own thing. Growth, clearly.
Weathering With You has the bolder ending. The kid chooses love over the entire CITY. Shinkai never went that hard again.
Shinkai peaked at Your Name and everything since has been beautiful variations on the same chord. Suzume included.
The rain in Weathering With You is the best water animation ever put to screen. Pure peak.
A talking chair as the love interest was a choice and I respect the absolute audacity of Suzume for it.
Suzume = head, Weathering = heart, Your Name = both. That's the whole ranking and you know it.
