Add your commentI actually tried this. Had AI rewrite my profile and got 3x more matches in a week. Then I met one of those matches and she literally said 'you seem different than your profile.' We didn't have a second date. So yeah. It backfired.
The question isn't whether AI helped you write it. The question is: does the profile accurately represent you? If it says you're adventurous and spontaneous and you prefer spending weekends reorganizing your sock drawer, that's the lie. The AI is just the vehicle.
Challenge to everyone defending AI profiles: show your date the original AI prompt you used on the first meeting. If you'd be embarrassed to do that, you already know it crossed a line.
Catfishing implies you're pretending to be someone you're NOT. An AI helping you phrase things better is like hiring a ghostwriter for your bio. Nobody calls James Patterson a fraud because he has co-authors.

Genuinely curious where people draw the line. Spell check? Acceptable. Grammar tool? Fine. AI suggesting better word choices? Gray area? AI rewriting the whole thing? Dishonest? The technology exists on a spectrum and pretending there's a clean cutoff is intellectually lazy.
The ghostwriter analogy keeps coming up and I think it fundamentally misses the point. When you hire a ghostwriter for a memoir, readers don't then have to DATE the ghostwriter. The text is the product. In dating, the text is a GATEWAY to a real human being. Those are categorically different situations.

ok but there's a difference between putting your best foot forward and having a machine construct a FICTIONAL version of you that you couldn't live up to in person. if the first date feels like meeting a stranger, something went wrong

i dont think its catfishing but i do think its a symptom of how broken these apps are if we need AI just to get noticed as regular normal people
If the profile gets you the date and the date goes well and you fall in love and get married, was it wrong? I'm asking genuinely because I don't think outcomes are irrelevant to ethics here

Actually catfishing means using SOMEONE ELSE'S photos and identity. AI writing assistance doesn't even come close to that definition. People need to learn what words mean before using them.

Fraud requires intent to deceive for gain. An AI-polished bio doesn't meet that legal or ethical threshold. We need to stop using serious words like 'fraud' for what amounts to getting a little help with marketing yourself.
