The Domain vs. South Congress: Which one ruined Austin more?

Both areas get credit for putting Austin on the map — and both get blamed for turning the city into something unrecognizable. Which development did more damage to what made this place special?

The Domain has an Apple Store, a Tiffany, and a Kendra Scott. South Congress has…also a Kendra Scott. And an Apple Store. So.

The Domain is basically what happens when a city lets developers answer the question 'what if Dallas?' and says yes.

The Domain is just a mall that convinced itself it was a neighborhood. At least South Congress still has a soul, even if it's a soul that now costs $18 for a candle.

Hot take: The Domain is actually more honest because it never pretended to be anything other than a consumption machine. SoCo sold the 'keep austin weird' lie while charging $900/month for a storage unit-sized apartment above a vintage store.

I moved here from Seattle in 2019 and honestly The Domain feels more like a planned city in China than anything in Texas. It's impressive in a deeply unsettling way.

My grandmother used to take me to the original Güero's on SoCo in the early 2000s and now there's a line of people with ring lights trying to photograph their tacos. I don't know who to be mad at exactly but I am.

South Congress was already being gentrified before most of you even heard of Austin. This isn't a new conversation, people were saying this in 2005.

I work up near the Domain and the traffic on 183 is genuinely a public health crisis. That's the real issue here, not vibes.

Anyone who says The Domain ruined Austin has never had to park on South Congress on a Saturday. At least The Domain has a garage.

neither one ruined austin. tech money ruined austin. stop blaming real estate for what employers did

South Congress has better food. The Domain has free parking. Discuss.
