Add your commentmy grandfather built a house in what is now the middle of brickell back in 1971. watching what this area has become is genuinely surreal. not saying growth is bad but there was supposed to be a whole rapid transit plan for this corridor that just... never happened? they approved something like three different versions of a BRT or light rail expansion over the decades and each one quietly died. we chose real estate revenue over livability every single time and now we all get to sit in traffic together regardless of how much rent we pay
Lived in Brickell since 2009. I promise you it is genuinely getting worse. I used to drive from my place near Mary Brickell Village to Wynwood in maybe 18 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. Last weekend it took 47 minutes. That's not me being soft, that's math. The population of this corridor has basically tripled and the roads are the exact same roads. We added luxury towers but zero meaningful transit infrastructure. It's embarrassing for a city that wants to call itself world class.
The Metromover is free and goes exactly where most people in Brickell need to go and yet everyone acts like it doesn't exist. I ride it every single day from Brickell station to downtown and it takes 6 minutes. SIX. But sure, sit in traffic for an hour in your BMW, that's fine too.
I want to challenge everyone here who's blaming the new residents: you really think the people moving into those Brickell towers are ADDING cars? Half of them are young finance bros who walk to work or take the Metromover. The traffic is coming from people commuting IN from Kendall, Doral, and Hialeah because THAT'S where the affordable housing is. You want less Brickell traffic? Build affordable housing inside the urban core. But that's not a sexy conversation so we just yell at each other online instead.
Can someone explain to me why the Brickell City Centre construction on 8th Street has been going on for what feels like four consecutive presidential administrations? At some point 'ongoing construction' stops being an excuse and starts being a civic failure. I've rerouted through side streets so many times I now have strong opinions about the potholes on SW 12th Ave.
Moved here from Chicago eight months ago and I genuinely thought people were exaggerating. They were not exaggerating. I sat on the I-95 southbound merge at Brickell for 55 minutes on a Tuesday. A Tuesday! In Chicago at least the misery is evenly distributed across the whole city. Here it's just laser-focused on this one neighborhood like the universe has a grudge.
Nope. Hard disagree with the 'we're just soft' framing. That's the kind of thing people say to avoid accountability. Miami-Dade ranks consistently among the worst metro areas in the country for traffic congestion per capita. This is documented. FDOT has the data. Pretending it's a mindset issue instead of an infrastructure funding issue is exactly why nothing ever gets fixed here.
Hot take and I'll stand by it: the real problem is nobody in Miami knows how to merge. Like, the infrastructure is bad but if people just learned to zipper merge like literally every other developed country does, we'd cut gridlock by 30% overnight. I've seen people in Ferraris sitting diagonally across two lanes on the 95 ramp because they refuse to let anyone in. That's not a road problem, that's a cultural problem.
