Add your commentI want someone — anyone — to explain to me why the Chinatown/International District station situation has been handled so poorly. That neighborhood has dealt with construction disruption, reduced foot traffic, and businesses closing for years now, and the mitigation from Sound Transit has been basically nothing. We can celebrate regional connectivity AND acknowledge that the costs aren't shared equally. Both things are true. The communities closest to the construction always pay the highest price.
I've lived in Ballard my entire life — 51 years — and I remember when they promised us light rail would be done by 2035. Now they're saying 2039, maybe 2041 if you squint at the fine print. My knees aren't getting any younger and honestly at this point I'll be riding this thing to my own funeral. But yeah, sure, worth it. I guess.
Fun fact nobody mentions: Sound Transit has NEVER delivered a major project on time or on budget. Not once. ST2 ballooned massively. ST3 is already billions over. At what point do taxpayers get to ask serious questions about the agency itself rather than just accepting "construction is hard" as an explanation? This isnt pessimism its pattern recognition.
the 3rd ave situation is a genuine crisis tho. rerouting all those buses while also doing the rail work downtown has made my commute from renton like an hour and twenty minutes each way. i dont have a car. i dont have options. easy to say "worth it" when you wfh or drive.
Moved here from Chicago two years ago and people complaining about construction delays are absolutely wild to me. You know what Chicago had? Decades of underinvestment and a crumbling El that breaks down constantly. Seattle is BUILDING something. Yes it's loud and yes the detours on Westlake are annoying but this is how cities grow up. Stop whining.
My dad actually worked on the original Link construction back in the early 2000s and he always said the same thing — nobody remembers the pain once the trains are running. I took Link to the airport last month and it was genuinely seamless. Fast forward 15 years and people will say the same thing about the Ballard extension. Short memories, people.
Counterpoint to everyone complaining: have you DRIVEN I-5 through downtown at 5pm lately? Because that is also construction hell AND it never ends AND it goes nowhere. At least the light rail has a finish line.
Actually light rail was invented in Seattle so we basically owe it to the rest of the country to get this right. Just thought people should know that before criticizing the project.
