Add your commentThe construction started in 2019. That's FIVE years for a road that services tens of thousands of daily commuters. Five. Years. My neighbor had her appendix out, recovered, got a new job, had a baby, and started a garden business in the time it's taken them to repave three miles of highway. This is not normal.
Lived on the south side of Springfield my whole life — 44 years — and I genuinely cannot remember what that stretch of 50 looked like without orange cones. My kids think construction is just part of the road. That's not a joke, that's a cry for help.
Someone needs to ask the county board directly at the next public meeting what the actual completion date is with a penalty clause if they miss it. I went to one of those meetings last spring and the answer was essentially 'we're on schedule' with zero specifics. On schedule for WHAT? What schedule? Show me the document. I want the document.
Here's what nobody wants to admit: this is what happens when county population explodes and infrastructure planning doesn't keep pace. Sarpy grew by like 25% in a decade. You can't build roads fast enough when everyone from Omaha is moving south all at once. Is it frustrating? Yes. Is it mismanagement? Partially. Is it also just math? Also yes.
Just moved here from Lincoln about eight months ago and I genuinely thought the orange cones were temporary when I bought my house. My realtor said 'oh theyre almost done with that.' I want to find that realtor.
Genuinely curious — has anyone actually filed a formal complaint with NDOT or contacted Senator Brandt's office about this? Asking sincerely, not being sarcastic. Because if the answer is 'no, we just complain online,' then maybe that's part of the problem too. Real question for Springfield residents: what have you actually DONE beyond honking?
Fun fact: Highway 50 is actually a state highway maintained by NDOT, not Sarpy County. So blaming the county commission for this is technically incorrect — the project falls under Nebraska Department of Transportation jurisdiction and federal funding timelines. Before everyone piles on the county, at least aim your frustration at the right people.
^ okay but the county absolutely has a voice in prioritizing and advocating for project timelines with the state. 'not technically our problem' is exactly the attitude that lets this stuff drag on forever. every elected official in sarpy can pick up a phone.
i mean its bad but calling it the SINGLE biggest quality of life failure feels dramatic lol. have you tried finding affordable housing in sarpy county lately??? thats my personal nightmare every single morning and no construction zone is fixing that
my grandpa used to drive that same stretch to get to work at the plant in the 70s and he says the road was bad THEN too. some things are just eternal in nebraska i guess. death, taxes, and highway 50 being a mess
Nope. Hard disagree. The Gretna interchange backup is way worse and nobody talks about it. At least 50 is MOVING toward something. That interchange has been a disaster with zero progress for years.
My commute from Springfield to Papillion used to be 18 minutes. Now I budget 40 on a good day, 55 if someone so much as looks at a cone wrong. I've listened to three entire audiobook series in that construction zone. Three. I'm basically getting a college education in traffic.
Biggest quality of life failure? No. Annoying? Obviously. But I drove through road construction in the KC metro for SIX years on I-435 before moving here. This is amateur hour compared to what Missouri does to its commuters. Perspective, people.
