Add your commentI grew up in Springfield, went to Husker games with my grandpa every fall from age six until he passed. Those drives up 370 to Lincoln are some of the best memories of my life. Rooting for the Huskers isn't really about football for a lot of us. It's about who we sat next to.
Born and raised in Papillion, lived here my whole 47 years. Let me be crystal clear: there is exactly ONE football team in this state and their helmets are red. You want to root for someone else? Move to Iowa. I don't make the rules, Nebraska does.
Unpopular opinion incoming: the Huskers haven't given us a whole lot of reasons to stay die-hard loyal since the Osborne era. I'm not abandoning ship, I'm just saying demanding absolute fealty when we haven't won a Big Ten title feels a little rich at this point. Fight me.
It was NOT six straight national championships lol. It was three titles in the 90s plus the 70 and 71 seasons. Please do not spread misinformation about Husker history in public, this is how rumors start and feelings get hurt.
Creighton basketball is a completely separate conversation and anyone lumping that in with football disloyalty is being deliberately obtuse. You can bleed Bluejay blue in March and Husker red in September and sleep just fine at night. These are not conflicting loyalties. They never were.
I actually got into an argument at the Hy-Vee on 84th about this exact thing. Lady behind me in line had a Cowboys hat on. In Springfield. In October. I didn't say anything but I thought a LOT of things.
okay so i just moved here from Kansas City like eight months ago and nobody told me i had to surrender my Chiefs gear at the county line lol. my neighbor actually left a printed schedule of Husker games in my mailbox with a sticky note that said 'just so you know.' i thought it was sweet honestly
technically speaking the NFL doesn't even HAVE a nebraska team so chiefs fans and broncos fans around here aren't betraying anything. the huskers are college. completely different sport, completely different league. this comparison drives me up the wall every single time someone brings it up at pickup
Serious question for the lifelong locals here: is it worse to root for Iowa, or to just not care about football at all? Asking for myself. I genuinely cannot tell which one gets me in more trouble at the block party.
My dad literally drove past Memorial Stadium every single week just to remind us kids what mattered. We didnt even go to games that often, just drove past. That man understood something.
Betrayal is a strong word. Cultural offense though? Yeah I'll cop to that. There's a social contract living in Nebraska and part of it is you at least pretend on game day. Nobody's asking you to tattoo the N on your forehead. Just wear the shirt.
Fun fact: the University of Nebraska at Omaha actually has its own athletic programs now and they're Division I! So technically you could root for the Mavericks and stay local AND avoid the whole Husker debate entirely. You're welcome.
