Hot take nobody asked for: Springfield staying under the radar is literally why property values havent gone completely insane yet. The second we start campaigning for 'our own spotlight' a developer shows up and turns the old grain elevator into luxury lofts. No thank you.
Springfield is technically its own incorporated city and has been since the 1800s, so whoever called us Papillion's backyard can kindly look at a map. We predate half the suburbs people are so proud of out here.
Papillion has a rec center because Papillion has like 25,000 more people than us. This isn't a conspiracy against Springfield, it's just math. I love this town but the 'we're being ignored' framing drives me up a wall. You want amenities? Support local businesses, show up to city meetings, vote in local elections. The spotlight isn't something that gets handed to you.
I moved here from Omaha proper about three years ago and honestly the identity question is real. When I tell people where I live they either say 'oh like the Simpsons?' or they just go blank. There's no hook, no thing Springfield is KNOWN for. That's not a personal attack, it's just true, and I think it matters for long-term growth whether people want to admit it or not.
Springfield has the best Fourth of July parade in Sarpy County, full stop, and anyone who disagrees has never actually been to it. That IS an identity. Maybe not a Yelp-able one but it counts.
okay but can we at least get a decent coffee shop that isnt a 15 minute drive away. the low profile is fine i guess but the low AMENITIES thing is getting old
My grandpa ran a shop on Main Street for 30 years and people from all over Sarpy County came through. There was a real town pulse back then. I dont want to be nostalgic about it but something did change when the growth went north toward Papillion and La Vista instead of coming through here. Feels like we got bypassed and just accepted it.
genuine question for people who've lived here longer than me — is there actually any organized push at the city council level to attract any kind of development, or does everyone just kind of shrug? asking because i went to one meeting and it felt like the agenda was mostly about a fence dispute
