Add your commentBorn and raised in Springfield, graduated from Platteview in 2009. The loyalty isn't blind — it's earned. My kids are there now and the teachers actually know their names, know their struggles, know their strengths. You don't get that in a district with 25,000 students. Pap-La Vista is fine but it's a machine. Platteview is a community. That difference is real and it shows up in ways that don't appear on any spreadsheet.
Moved here from Omaha three years ago specifically because we wanted a smaller school environment for our daughter who has anxiety. Best decision we ever made. Her counselor responds to emails within the hour. Her math teacher voluntarily tutors before school. I literally cannot imagine that happening at a massive suburban campus. The tax hit is real, I won't lie, but for us personally it has been worth every single penny.
What I want someone to explain to me — and I mean anyone, seriously, challenge me if I'm wrong — is exactly which line item on our property tax bill is going to Platteview versus Sarpy County general fund versus metro stuff. Because people keep saying 'the tax hit' like ALL of it goes to the school district and that is factually not how property taxes work. A significant chunk of what you're paying has nothing to do with Platteview at all. Can we please have an accurate conversation before we start blaming the district for our entire tax bill?
Used to live in Springfield for about six years, relocated to Bellevue for work. Honestly miss it. The Platteview community events, the Friday night games where literally the whole town shows up, the fact that my son's fifth grade teacher came to his baseball tournament just because she wanted to. You can't manufacture that culture. Whether the academics are perfect or not — and no school is perfect — that sense of belonging matters for kids more than people give it credit for.
Hard disagree with the nostalgia crowd. Small doesn't automatically mean good. Limited AP course offerings, no dedicated arts wing, the athletic facilities needed updates like five years ago. Meanwhile Papillion-La Vista South has resources that Platteview just flat out cannot compete with at scale. At some point 'everyone knows your name' stops paying for college.
My brother actually pulled his kids and moved into the Papillion boundary last year. Said the final straw was finding out Platteview doesn't offer AP Computer Science. In 2024. That's not a small-town charm thing that's just falling behind. I love Springfield but we have to be honest about what the tradeoffs actually are instead of just defending it reflexively.
ok so genuine question for anyone who actually knows: aren't Platteview's ACT scores consistently below the state average? i looked it up a while back and thought i remembered that. if thats true then the 'great education' argument kinda falls apart doesn't it? paying Sarpy County taxes and getting below-average outcomes is not a great deal
lol at people acting like pap-la vista is some paradise. my cousin teaches there and says the class sizes are out of control and admin is completely disconnected from what happens in classrooms. grass is always greener etc etc. springfield folks complaining about platteview have clearly never sat through a Papillion school board meeting
